Gourmet Farmer: Shop Special ; Series 3, Episode 5 |
Summary |
When former food critic, Matthew Evans, swapped his city life to have a go at small farm living in Tasmania, he really put to the test his primary belief that people should be directly connected with their food: either by growing it, rearing it, or sourcing it from local producers.Matthew and Nick's new shop venture, A Common Ground, provides many challenges; meeting demand with a variable supply of seasonal local produce, maintaining commitment to ethically grown and prepared food whilst managing the bottom line. The shop is not in the ideal location either and a couple of new ideas are needed to increase sales. They decide selling and shipping seasonal food hampers, along with diverse advertising, might just bolster profits.Nick's commitment to quality as a cheese maker sees him struggle to navigate Australia's complicated regulations around food processing to produce the only non-pasteurized cheese made and sold in Australia. He also has another cheese idea in mind; saffron infused cheese. Matthew meanwhile is interested in producing a sloe infused gin and enlists the help of local whiskey maker, Bill Lark, to show him how. Matthew had plans to build a commercial kitchen but the cost is prohibitive. Ross tells him about a caravan fitted out with a commercial kitchen that is for sale on Bruny Island. The mobile kitchen could be great for Matthew's other venture; making and selling foods in markets and festivals around Tasmania. .
