This thesis investigates the perceived 'culture'/'nature' opposition presented as a dominant, biased and antagonistic relationship engrained in the language of Western culture. By focusing on whale texts it explores the portrayal of whales and the natural world, and suggests that Schopenhaurean thought offers a cogent approach to ecocritically reading literature
