Summary From acclaimed filmmaker Mark Lewis (Cane Toads, RAT and The Natural History of the Chicken) comes an exciting new series: The Pursuit Of Excellence. The Pursuit of Excellence is a series of four films that reveal the ambition, the determination and the passion of those who pursue excellence in slightly unconventional fields. The films unearth a better understanding of each activity - as unusual as some of them are - and build to a suspenseful conclusion on the floor of the competition arena. The featured characters are diverse in background, but warmly endearing and sympathetic - people consumed by passion with strong ambitions in their individual quest. In Lords of The Gourd, the extreme gardeners who compete at the annual Cooperstown Weigh Off have one obsessive goal - to raise the biggest giant pumpkin in the world. These gurus of the gourd nurture their fruits through harsh weather, floods, animal attacks and even sabotage to produce glorious pumpkins of gigantic proportion. We follow Joe Pukos and his fellow competitors through the final harrowing days of harvest and the journey across the state with the bulging behemoths strapped into the back of their pick-ups. Joe is a real contender - at least until last minute rumours circulate that another grower may be set to smash the world record.PRODUCTION DETAILS:The Pursuit of Excellence is a Radio Pictures production in association with PBS and ABC TV
