Summary The purpose of the study was to research good practices at three school levels, preschool, compulsory school, and secondary school, that contribute to the social and academic success of immigrant children and students. The project integrates four subthemes and main research areas, including children/students, teachers, leaders, and policy. We used purposive sampling methods to identify successful schools for the study, primarily by the means of external expert groups. We then identified through school leaders successful children/students within each of the schools, whom we engaged in semi-structured interviews. This study is a part of the Nordic research project Learning spaces for inclusion and social justice: Success stories from immigrant students and school communities in four Nordic countries. The aim of this case is to introduce and discuss methodological and conceptual challenges encountered, a number of which confronted the research team, including choosing successful schools and research with immigrants, children, and youth related to positions of power and social difference
