Summary "The selections in this book are offered for two main purposes. One is to provide some exposure to specific formulations and empirical investigations as a supplement to the synthetic treatment of the field by a standard textbook. Most of the work collected here has involved some controversy; all of it is illustrative of high competence brought to bear on particular problems of real relevance to increasing our fund of human understanding. None of it, however, is definitive. In every case, there are alternatives to be considered, new questions to be raised, and issues to be met in order to fit the ideas and findings reported to other concepts and other observations. For the interested student, each selection is a starting point from which, by tracking down the subsequent literature on the same specific topic, he can develop a reasonably firm comprehension of how psychological science grows, corrects itself, and over time resolves the arguments that occur among its practitioners. The second purpose is simply to indicate, over a rather narrow spectrum of traditional and fundamental topics, some of the wide range of differences among psychologists as they attack the human puzzle. The authors of the fourteen articles collected in this volume represent all three of the approaches to psychology discussed here, and they vary widely in the breadth and articulateness of their vision and in the degree to which they are directly concerned with the major issues we have tried to clarify in this introduction in the hope of making psychology more useful as a contributor to human understanding. Their work is representative only of diversity, but in that diversity may lie both the challenge to the reader and the impetus for future psychologists to convert psychological science into the groundwork of wisdom, which probably always contains room within itself for diverse ideas about so diverse a creature as man"--Introduction.
