As 2019 began to draw to a close, Dr. Christine Franklin (alias), a pharmaceutical executive with 30 years of progressive responsibilities in clinical research, began to examine her life from a different perspective. This case study provides an opportunity to discuss transition coaching and the potential it can have for anyone exploring their next personal and professional stages, the intersection of career management and transition coaching, and how the latter can be an invaluable tool in helping individuals navigate their career journey. This case illustrates how transition coaching can help an individual recognize, accept, and navigate what is often a very emotional journey. The case presents key concepts of liminality, unconditional positive regard, and visualization, and demonstrates how these can be effective tools in helping Dr. Franklin assess her options and make sound career choices. Students are invited to place themselves in the role of transition coach to Dr. Franklin and examine how they would structure the relationship. They will prepare for a first and second coaching session and plan for the continuation of the coaching engagement that ultimately prepares Dr. Franklin to "own" the final responsibility for her decisions |
