Summary Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf's award-winning semi-biographical film about an Afghani-born Canadian resident who goes to Afghanistan in the midst of war, to search for her suicidal sister. This film has been lauded for its realism in depicting a glimpse of life in war-torn Afghanistan. Nafas (Niloufar Pazira) is a journalist who was born in Afghanistan but as a child fled to Canada with her family. Her sister was not so fortunate. After losing her legs to a land mine, Nafas' sister was accidentally left behind when her family fled the country. When Nafas receives a letter stating that her sister has decided to commit suicide before the approaching eclipse of the sun, Nafas makes a desperate journey to war-ridden Afghanistan in an attempt to stop her sister from taking her own life. While crossing the country to get to her sister in time, Nafas is confronted by the disturbing portrait of the toll the Taliban regime has inflicted upon the people of her homeland.
