Summary On Thursday October 24, 1929, New York's Wall St Stock Exchange crashed. And though that one event alone was devastating, it was just the beginning of what would become the greatest economic crisis of the 20th century, the Great Depression. In this compelling and fast-paced documentary, award-winning writer/director William Karel (The World According To Bush) uses photos, songs and vision from the era to build a chronological account of events leading up to, and after, the crash on Wall St. He then asks renowned historians and economists - some of whom actually remember the crisis - to talk us through this heart-breaking and complex tragedy, step by step. The Great Depression asks why did so many people trust the stock market? At what point did the market lose touch with reality? And did the US's attempts to rescue the economy directly lead to the rise of Nazism in Germany? Episode 2 - The Depression Rattles the Whole WorldIn America, things are getting worse: wheat prices plummet and the mass migration of evicted farmers begins; the steel industry is working at 10% capacity, and there are picket lines and demonstrations - some brutally put down by the army. New York's mayor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, stands against President Hoover and wins in a landslide. In Germany, Hitler's reign of terror is starting, with many middle-class Germans, hit hard by the economic crisis, becoming his supporters. The Jews become the scapegoats for the hard times. President Roosevelt begins his 'New Deal' raft of programs, some of which aid the recovery and some don't. By 1937 America's GDP is back to pre-crash levels so Roosevelt pulls back the New Deal measures - a mistake. In fact it is war that pulls America out of the doldrums. The rapid build up of military spending due to the threat of conflict in Europe is what kick-starts US industry. As The Great Depression points out: seven years of desperate efforts did less to cure the sick economy than a few months of re-armament.
