DRUG CRAZEDWhen a man in Miami chewed off a homeless man's face, bath salts were blamed, and the previously little-known drug hit the headlines around the world. While it may sound innocuous, 'bath salts' is the name given to a mixture of synthetic chemicals, which are difficult to detect in drug tests and until recently could be sold legally in shops across the United States. But the catalogue of violent behaviour and mental instability among people addicted to them is growing. Nick Lazaredes meets families whose lives have been torn apart; some describe the change in behaviour and personality of their loved ones as like losing them completely. And it's a challenge too for the police; as one chemical composition is identified and outlawed, another emerges, and law enforcers are finding it difficult to keep up.UNHOLY MATRIMONYThe wedding of Israeli couple Mahmoud Mansour and Morel Malka should have been the happiest day of their lives. But outside, an angry crowd called on the Jewish bride to leave her Palestinian groom. On Tuesday's Dateline, Amos Roberts reports on the far-right group Lehava that wants to end intermarriage and enforce strict separation of Jews and Arabs. "We came here to establish a Jewish state and if they do something that isn't right, we have every right to stand and rail against it," the group's leader Bentzi Gopstein tells Amos. During regular night patrols in Jerusalem, Lehava activists warn Palestinian men to stay away from 'their' women. They even target children - earlier this year a bilingual school in Beersheba was plastered with Lehava stickers. Bentzi Gopstein boasts that he enjoys tacit approval from some Israeli politicians: "Some people support me and say, 'Well done, but don't tell anyone I said that.'"NO RULES SCHOOLIt sounds like a child's dream and a parent's nightmare... a school with no rules. But at Swanson School in Auckland, New Zealand, a blind eye is turned at break time while the kids run amok outside. On Tuesday's Dateline, Dani Isdale joins the children as they climb trees, skid around on bikes and fire makeshift weapons... it's all allowed and even encouraged. "The need to wrap up our kids in cotton wool and not give them an opportunity to hurt themselves... you are actually taking away a lot of learning opportunities," says principal Bruce McLachlan on the thinking behind it. When playtime ends, serious learning begins and he says the children are much more receptive, confident and cooperative after their 'free range' play. But he does admit to Dani that there is just one rule... the kids aren't allowed to kill each other. They love it, but do parents think he's gone too far? |
