Summary Alan Stanton and Paul Williams have been in practice together since the late 1980s. Having started by designing exhibitions, they have since handled much larger projects including the Millennium Seed Bank in Sussex, which opened in 2000. In their talk they describe how they work together, understanding each other almost intuitively. Clarity and integrity are constants in their design aims, they say, summed up in the word "wholeness". They talk about scale and space, and designing for movement through space; about the endless points to be considered when designing exhibitions; or about the problems of converting a Grade One listed building like Compton Verney. Both of them have a passion for art. Alan trained at the AA and UCLA and has worked in California; also for both Foster (see More With Less, Exploring The City and Chateau Margaux, France) and Rogers, and for Expo 70 in Osaka. Paul dropped out of architecture school and did an art degree and a post-graduate 3D design course, before starting designing exhibitions on his own
