Summary |
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, one of the greatest of all German composers, whose work straddled the end of Romanticism and the beginning of the modernist era. Strauss wrote some of the most beguiling music for the female voice and created some of the most forceful female characters in operatic history. This biography tells the story of his relationships, particularly with his wife and muse, Pauline. The film also explores the life of a complex character who lived through the last days of Empire and two World Wars culminating in the destruction of Germany. Some of the greatest Strauss sopranos, Renee Fleming, Brigitte Fassbaender, Gwyneth Jones and Christa Ludwig provide their insights into performing these famous roles and music.
