Sampling is typically done from veins in order to quantify drugs in plasma, serum or whole blood for purposes such as toxicology or therapeutic drug monitoring. However, there are drawbacks to this method which has raised interest in alternative sampling strategies. After discussing the challenges with conventional sampling strategies and opportunities for alternative, these alternative methods are explored, including: sampling from finger prick, hair, dried blood spots, meconium, oral fluids. Ambient ionization mass spectrometry for imaging tissue is discussed as an alternative to LC-MS/MS
