Summary *Coarse Language*100 years ago the birth of the motor vehicle in Detroit heralded a second American revolution, unleashing forces of mass production and consumerism that shaped the 20th century, and powered the wheels of American success. The car went on to revolutionise the geography, not just in Detroit but cities around the world, transforming the way we imagined ourselves and jump starting the American dream.Built by the car for the car Detroit was the fourth largest city in the USA and also one of the wealthiest. It had the country's first suburban shopping malls and major freeways to facilitate increasing numbers of commuters into the city. But the 21st century has turned the American dream into a nightmare. The poverty amongst the inner city black community has increased, with hunger and unemployment reaching critical proportions, in grim contrast to the affluent white suburbs that surround the city. Now it is truly a dystopic post-industrialised city with 40% of the land in the centre returning to prairie. Greenery grows up through abandoned office blocks, houses and collapsing car plants and swallows street lights, post offices and derelict police stations. There is no more rush hour and crime, vandalism, arson and dog fighting are the main activities.Requiem For Detroit? is a vivid evocation of an apocalyptic vision: a slow-motion Katrina that has had many more victims.Powered by extraordinary archives with vivid projections of the city in its heyday on its now abandoned buildings Requiem For Detroit? is a leisurely and artistic look at the decline of a once great American city, the Paris of the mid-west.PRODUCTION DETAILS:A Films of Record production for BBC.
