It had the country's first suburban shopping malls and major freeways to facilitate increasing numbers of commuters into the city.But the 21st century has turned the American dream into a nightmare. The poverty amongst the inner city black community has increased, with hunger and unemployment reaching critical proportions, in grim contrast to the affluent white suburbs that surround the city.Now it is truly a dystopic post-industrialised city with 40% of the land in the centre returning to prairie.
