Summary This book is the fruit of the Roman Road Expedition. Victor W. von Hagen led his team for five years through thirty-four countries and followed the course of more than 30,000 miles of ancient Roman roads. The expedition conducted the first systematic study of the Roman road system since the third century of our era, when Antoninus Augustus prepared a military itinerary for the Emperor Caracalla. The monumental exploration took von Hagen over snow-covered Alps, through deserts, bogs and moorlands, the arid Atlas mountains and the vast sand seas of Africa. His investigation of the roads that led to Rome provides, as well, a view of eight hundred years of Roman history. With 64 illustrations in full colour and 150 illustrations in black and white.
