The 79-year-old still lives in the ramshackle one bedroom farmhouse he's shared with his wife for 30 years, and as chickens peck round the garden chairs, he gives his very progressive take on world affairs. The former guerrilla leader, who spent 13 years in prison, has legalised gay marriage and marijuana, and courted controversy by agreeing with Barack Obama to accept prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. He and his wife, Senator Lucia Topolansky, have become a formidable force in Uruguyan politics, but after donating 90% of his salary to charity, he's happy to drive home in his trusty old VW Beetle to tend to his animals. In a world where politicians aren't always held in high esteem, could this man of the people be showing the way forward? And when his term ends, will his successor be following in his footsteps?SAVING ZACK?It's a year since Dateline first met 15-year-old Zack Lamb, who has one of the most severe cases of Tourette Syndrome in the United States, and it's been the biggest and most difficult year of his life. Aaron Lewis has continued following him as he's undergone experimental neurosurgery to implant an electrical device to control his brain. He and his family hope it'll put a stop to his violent rages and relentless involuntary tics and allow him to live a normal life. On Tuesday's Dateline, we find out if the surgery was successful and see what kind of boy has emerged from such a complex and life-changing operation. Zack also returns to the annual Camp Twitch and Shout for children with Tourette's, where we first saw him and his friend Cole Johnson. Cole is one of the few people who can truly understand what Zack is going through, and whatever the outcome of his surgery, help him take his next step towards adulthood |
