Summary During the Second World War, British Bomber Command recorded 73,000 casualties, the highest loss rate of any British Armed Force. But despite the deaths, Bomber Command had many successes, mostly due to its main weapon, the Avro Lancaster. The specialised missions performed by this remarkable aeroplane became part of aviation history and The Lancaster At War tells this story, through the eyes of those who flew her. And when Hitler's armies had spread across Occupied Europe, the four-engine Lancaster bombers were the only means of carrying the offensive back to the Nazi heartland. They were able to carry the huge 22,000 lb Tallboy bombs and also carried out the epic Dambusters Raid.Exclusive interviews with surviving Lancaster aircrew bring home the reality of taking part in these missions, night after relentless night, where the odds of survival were slim.Combining these moving and sometimes humorous recollections with archival and newly-shot footage of the Lancaster in flight and on the ground, the result is a first-hand account of the bomber's astonishing flying abilities and operational performance.
