Summary How did fixed gear bikes, artisanal cheese, craft beer and long beards evolve from being niche trends to cliches and commodities? Was hipster even a subculture at all? And why will no hipster ever admit to being one? The charming but not particularly hip Samuel Johnson off on an international odyssey meeting bloggers, trend forecasters, artists, photographers, graphic designers, musicians, tattoo artists, artisan bakers, baristas, bicycle couriers and rooftop gardeners. The series sets out to unpack how and why the now instantly recognisable hipster archetype grew from a localised street subculture to a global commodity, and ultimately a figure of ridicule, within the space of a few short years.Keen to further explore the hipsters' love of things of the past, Sam travels to Tokyo and meets some key players in Tokyo's vintage underground and discovers that in Japan, hipness is not about borrowing the best bits of past subcultures - it's defined by all-out commitment to your chosen style. Sam returns to LA to meet music writer Simon Reynolds, which sparks an investigation into hipster music. Sam meets LCD Soundsystem's Nancy Whang and young Australian bluesman Steve Smyth and asks them if - musically speaking - there is nothing new under the sun. Checking his Instagram feed, Sam has an epiphany: if hipsters don't like the future, how does the hashtag fit in? Sam heads to London to explore the dark side of social media with celebrated author Susan Greenfield and finds out why many hipsters are now checking in to "digital detox" camps: no smartphones allowed.
