Filmed over three years, this remarkable documentary follows Jane Campion through the writing, rehearsals, shooting, and launch of the television drama miniseries, TOP OF THE LAKE. What unfolds is a surprising, inspiring and often humorous insight into the creative process. The film begins in 2010, watching Jane at work during the development and writing of the crime-mystery miniseries TOP OF THE LAKE. Sharing this process is her long-time collaborator, sparring partner, and co-writer, Gerard Lee (with whom she co-authored SWEETIE and PASSIONLESS"ˆMOMENTS). In idyllic seclusion in a cottage in Devon, Jane and Gerard argue, get depressed, nap and celebrate. We witness the struggle between plot and inspiration, authenticity and cliche, deadlines and perfection. We jump to rehearsals at the fictional "Women's Camp" in New Zealand, where Jane and her actors improvise to discover the characters and their relationships. We see Jane at work with her leading actors, Holly Hunter and Elisabeth Moss, and then the challenges of the shoot with a veritable army of crew members. The filmmaker, Clare Young, worked as Jane's assistant on the miniseries, but was also simultaneously mentored by Jane on a slate of projects.
