Summary |
"Like many other other periodicals of the time, The Australian Pictorial Weekly did not survive more than a few months. Only eight issues are known, from 12 June 1880 to 31 July 1880. Australia's population was too small to support more than one or two periodicals of a similar kind. Like other colonial periodicals, The Australian Pictorial Weekly had to compete against English publications which continued to attract the readership of nostalgic immigrants and which, because of cheaper production costs, low postage rates and discount prices offered for bulk and forward orders, could be purchased at prices comparable to the Australian product." --Introduction |
