Christy Kenneally begins his search for Hinduism as it is expressed in art and architecture in Varanasi, the oldest inhabited city in the world. A microcosm of Hinduism, it has always attracted a large number of worshippers and pilgrims, some of whom come to Varanasi to die and be cremated on one of the pyres set up along the banks of the Ganges.
