"The book is concerned with the relationship between sport and collective identities in popular culture in contemporary society. It contains a range of new studies of the sociology and politics of this relationship particularly in France and Britain, but also in Europe more broadly, and in Australia (the Sydney 2000 Olympics) and South Africa. It looks at political and policy issues in the relationship between sport and national identities and also between sport and urban/local identitities. "Most of the chapters in this book have been developed from papers which were originally invited for and/or presented at an international workshop on "Social Identity and Popular Culture". This was part of a Euroconference on "Collective Identity and Symbolic Representation" held at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques in Paris, July 1996, with support from the European Commission. The three main organisers of the conference were the Centre d'Etudes et des Recherches Internationale [sic] (CERI), the European Association for the Advancement of Social Sciences (EAASS) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in the Social Sciences (ICCR, Vienna)...
