Summary An investigation into the state of the goldfields was considered desirable in 1862, 10 years after the discovery of gold in Victoria. Two questions were occupying the public in Victoria: Were the older goldfields becoming exhausted, and, What was the condition of the miners? So the Argus sent a reporter to the goldfields who reported his observations in letters in August, September and October 1862 which were published in the Argus and then published as a 331 page book in 1863. This CD-ROM is described as a facsimile reproduction of the original book. His report predated the report of a Gold Fields Royal Commission
