Summary |
An investigation into the state of the goldfields was considered desirable in 1862, 10 years after the discovery of gold in Victoria. Two questions were occupying the public in Victoria: Were the older goldfields becoming exhausted, and, What was the condition of the miners? So the Argus sent a reporter to the goldfields who reported his observations in letters in August, September and October 1862 which were published in the Argus and then published as a 331 page book in 1863. This CD-ROM is described as a facsimile reproduction of the original book. His report predated the report of a Gold Fields Royal Commission |
