M24: The story of the attack on Sydney Harbour by three Japanese midget submarines is well known by most Australians, and many can even recite the detail; May 31, 1942, the worst days of the war, the sinking of the Kuttabul, 21 ratings killed, two subs sunk and recovered, and the one that disappeared. The fate of the missing submarine, M24, has been one of the great maritime sagas, one of the most intriguing tales of the war, a puzzle which has teased and perplexed historians for 63 years. Now, it seems the mystery has been solved. According to this documentary film the wreck of the sub lies in about 20m of water just off the mouth of Broken Bay, east of Lion island. If the discovery can be conclusively authenticated, it will shed new light on an critical episode in our history |
