Summary The author's premise is that our current education system in Australia is currently not fit for purpose, given the complex challenges it faces: to improve learning outcomes in core academic areas; to better prepare young people for adult life; and to do so in a way that is equitable. He explains why and how we should move to an adaptive education system that would be neither top-down nor bottom-up; one which would balance local decision making with top-down guidance and resource allocation. He discusses how the transformed system would be designed to learn from the best of what works today, and to enable the changes needed for tomorrow. [Back cover]
