Summary "The author argues that in Australia, while we may be making some progress in schools on the first three 'R's - reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmetic - we are excelling with the fourth 'R' of schooling, getting our practices and policies very '(w)rong'. He identifies a range of indicators suggesting that the current model of schooling is primitive, outdated and failing to meet the needs of today's students. In particular, he explores issues related to measures, tests and mindsets, school refusal and student disengagement as a system problem, the school 'isolated' from its community, and the crucial need to to encourage and support innovation. He concludes that the end goal must be to replace the existing school system with new, more flexible delivery systems, and that this requires reconceptualisation, development and trialling of alternatives to the schools and schooling with which we have been familiar"--Back cover
