Summary The study found that lay women who were under-represented in principalships were often better qualified, were available and had exercised leadership roles in middle management positions. The barrier then was "male advantage"- exacerbated by attitudes in the Catholic Church. Recommendations were provided for policy and practice to assist in alleviating this dilemma
