This thesis explores the careers and professional lives of experienced classroom teachers with commitment to student-centred education, identifying the factors that influenced their careers and engagement with their work. Critical incidents in the teachers' professional lives are discussed in relation to theories of motivation and the nature of Professional Learning Communities
