Summary |
“This book draws together what is known about the biology of otters in a straightforward and readily understood way. It distills the large amount of research which has been carried out on various species of otters, notably the Eurasian otter, the American river otter and sea otters.” “Much of the book is concerned with the ecology of otters including diet, competition, movements, social organisation, scent communication, breeding and mortality. In addition the structure and appearance of otters, including their adaptation to an aquatic way of life, are described and the possible evolutionary relationship between species are outlined. There is also an extensive section on the relationship between otters and man, including hunting for sport and for fur and the conservation of otters. The ecology of otters is not considered in isolation; wherever possible comparisons are made with other species of mammals. The result is a book which gives a great deal of information on otters but which also places them in a larger ecological framework.”--Back cover |
