Summary In 1941, surrealism was declared dead and has been described as such in all art history books since that time. Try telling that to Australian surrealist James Gleeson. Born in Sydney in 1915, Gleeson studied art at East Sydney Technical College and taught at the Sydney Teachers College, where his first surrealist painting "City on a Tongue" was included in a student exhibition in 1938. He has exhibited regularly since 1939, although for a while writing, especially poetry, occupied Gleeson almost as much as painting
