Summary "IOU pays tribute to Robin Boyd (1919 - 1971) - the great modernist Australian architect, writer and public intellectual. As a member of the artistic Boyd dynasty, Robin Boyd was the most influential Australian architect in the post-war era. He left a lasting cultural legacy not just in his innovative designs for domestic housing, but also in his controversial ideas about the built environment. In IOU: Robin Boyd, his cultural legacy is examined through interviews with a number of Australian design practitioners including architects, educators, visual artists and interior designers who have been influenced by his work. During the 1950s and '60s, Boyd became a household name for being an architect and public intellectual who made matters of design taste part of the public discourse. Through magazine and newspaper articles and a series of University of the Air ABC TV shows, Boyd spoke about everything to do with architecture and design - from the everyday, to high art. IOU: Robin Boyd reveals the beauty of several innovative and rarely-seen Boyd-designed houses. From his days at the student publication Smudges, to his futuristic post-war House of Tomorrow exhibit-and his scathing book The Australian Ugliness - the program highlights an aesthetic debate that continues today. "Boyd's first project was a wonderful little fibro-cement-sheeted studio he designed for his cousin, the now famous artist, Arthur Boyd. The studio (since demolished) was built in the back garden of the family house in Murrumbeena, Melbourne. Looking at Robin's whole career, you can see that this initial idea of 'studio living' for the modern metropolitan man and woman would influence his work well into the 1950s and '60s," Professor Philip Goad says. Interviews also include: visual artist Darren Wardle, designer Mary Featherston and architect Cassandra Fahey."--website
