"The need for a comprehensive exhibition of the work of George Bell and his students has long been obvious. Bell occupies a unique position in the development of Australian art. After spending a significant portion of his career working in a tradiational manner, he was converted to modern art and spent the remainder of his life instilling its principles into two generations of Australian painters. By bringing together the work of sixty-five artists, including some who were fellow spirits or passers-by, this exhibition makes it possible for the first time to see the nature and significance of Bell's contribution.
