Summary |
The inmates in the asylum at Charenton (1808) perform a play written and directed by the Marquis de Sade. It tells of the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, one of the leaders of the French Revolution. The centre of the play is a dialectical debate between Marat who argues the case for violent revolution and de Sade who counters that the idea of revolution is false since men are, by nature, unequal and will always seek to gratify their own individual desires. As the play comes to an end the inmates identify with their roles and go on the rampage. While observing the general shape of the play, the film attempts to use the special resources of the cinema to burrow deeper into it |
