"During the 1980s and 1990s, Hollywood released an outpouring of films about schools. Interestingly, many of these films intentionally made race an issue. Hollywood Films about Schools offers a study of the predominant messages that these "school films" attempt to communicate. Ronald Chennault explores such movies as Dangerous Minds, Renaissance Minds, and Lean on Me, while weaving into his analysis a theoretical framework that relies on the insights of race studies, critical pedagogy, and media and cultural studies. Chennault's process of inquiry incorporates a consideration of the agendas of three presidential administration, significant occurences in the cultural and educational spheres, and studies of race and politics.
