In August 1860, the Victorian Exploring Expedition left Melbourne for the Gulf of Carpentaria. Its leader, Robert O'Hara Burke, wanted to be the first to cross Australia from south to north. In February 1861, with William John Wills, he achieved his goal, but both men died tragically on the return journey
