Summary "I00 years before Christopher Columbus sailed to America, Emperor Yongle ordered that a giant fleet leave China on a voyage of discovery. Its commander, Zheng He, oversaw the building of 300 junks in a dry dock, an idea which Europeans did not discover until over a century later. The Chinese boats were four times larger than Columbus's ship, and navigated with the help of star charts, and a compass. The fleet had animal transporters, farm ships, and water carriers to ensure fresh supplies during their time at sea. Soybean sprouts were grown on the farm ships to prevent the sailors from dying of scurvy. Scurvy was still a scourge for European seafarers until the end of the eighteenth century.
