Summary |
Indonesia's history is still relatively unfamiliar and understudied, this book looks at the social and political landscape of twentieth-century Indonesia. The country's origins under the Dutch is explained, the subsequent anti-colonial struggle and the revolution which led to independence in 1949. Then the 1950's which was a crucial period in the formation of Indonesia as a new nation, followed by the Sukarno years, the anti-communist massacres of the 1960s. The concluding chapters chart the fall of Suharto's New Order and the subsequent political and religious turnoil which culminated in the Bali bombings in 2002 |
