In many Southeast Asian countries, the middle of the 20th century marks the beginning of a new era: Independence from the colonial powers had been achieved, and young states such as Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore were faced with the task of reconstituting themselves as nations and to develop an independent postcolonial identity. Architecture and town planning played an important role in this process. The result is local forms of modernity that seek to combine universal demands with specific social conditions. This volume takes a critical look at the structural and ideological heritage and advocates the preservation and reprogramming of these special architectures, which are now in danger of disappearing with rapid urbanization |

Architektur und Städtebau spielten in diesem Prozess eine wichtige Rolle. Entstanden sind dabei lokale Ausformungen der Moderne, die universelle Ansprüche mit spezifischen gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen zu verbinden suchen.
