Summary Yet there are many kinds of television, and many ways of using it. The drive towards homogeneity is not irresistible. These challenging essays by journalists, independent producers and researchers describe indigenous television in Brazil, in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Aboriginal networks in Australia and the Deep Dish Satellite Network's alternative coverage in America of the Gulf War. Against the odds, local initiatives around the world are creating new opportunities for national, regional and ethnic identities to find expression through the medium of television
Television is now a global system, increasingly concentrated in the hands of huge corporations dedicated to the pursuit of profit by selling a standardised product round the world. The same programmes, news as well as entertainment, can be seen by suburbanites in the American Mid-West, by Indian villagers, by slum dwellers in the metropolises of Latin America and Asia. The assumption is that television now works largely to flatten out cultural and political differences and to erase local identities
