ANIMALS. AUSTRALIAN. During the allocated weekly hour for cultural practice at Shalom Christian College in 2010, the Yolngu students worked with Pamela Wallace assisted by Cat Scanlan. They chose to work on a book for children, featuring their drawings and names of living things from their own country, Elcho Island. They decided what to do, and made some rough sketches. Next they visited Black Ink Press, where they looked at some finished books, and tried to visualise their own book. During weekly visits to Black Ink Press, they executed their drawings, identified Yolngu names for the animals, and checked spellings. There were some lively discussions about the animals, their habits, how to catch them, and whether they make good eating.
