Aortic Arteritis, Giant Cell -- See Giant Cell Arteritis

A systemic autoimmune disorder that typically affects medium and large ARTERIES, usually leading to occlusive granulomatous vasculitis with transmural infiltrate containing multinucleated GIANT CELLS. The TEMPORAL ARTERY is commonly involved. This disorder appears primarily in people over the age of 50. Aortic Dissections -- See Aneurysm, Dissecting

An aneurysm caused by a tear in the TUNICA INTIMA of a blood vessel leading to interstitial HEMORRHAGE, and splitting (dissecting) of the vessel wall, often involving the AORTA. Dissection between the tunica intima and TUNICA MEDIA causes luminal occlusion. Dissection at the media, or between the media and the outer ADVENTITIA causes aneurismal dilation
