Terms of reference: (1) examine and report on: (a) procedures for identifying asbestos in Defence establishments and equipment for subsequent remedial action; (b) instructions for personnel who may be exposed to asbestos; (c) training of personnel in relation to the handling of asbestos; (d) procedures within defence for personnel to make compensation claims for asbestos-related conditions; with a view to identifying those areas where improvements can be made and providing a basis for decisions on the priority of action to improve or remedy the existing situation; (2) Review the adequacy of information available to personnel who may have been exposed to asbestos, the procedures for identifying such personnel and the maintenance of records to facilitate subsequent consideration of compensation claims concerning asbsestos-related illnesses. The terms of reference address current practices and procedures for the handling of asbestos and related personnel issues. The objective is to ensure that Defence has the best possible practices for dealing with asbestos and that those who may have been exposed to asbestos receive effective and sympathetic support.
