Summary This dataset deals with a new approach towards material content analysis. We follow a combination of material culture and design studies, focusing on the ways material objects mirror various socio-cultural norms and conventions. As we found ourselves surrounded with objects in our daily lives, we chose to highlight the special attributes of healthcare products in a hospital environment. This choice is based on the assumption that hospital patients, as well as healthcare professionals do not have the luxury to choose various objects, as we do in other consumer products. Rather, their choice is based on function, need, or economic constraints. The data were gathered through an ongoing research focused on healthcare design at the physiotherapy and occupational therapy departments at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel. The research is a combined effort by a design anthropologist (Jonathan Ventura), a designer (Ifat Keinan-Guy), and a physiotherapist (Renana Adani). We chose to focus on improvisation tactics at the hospital, to highlight how material improvisations mirror the tactics patients and the medical staff deal with their daily challenges. We will present several examples of how to identify improvisations and interpret healthcare design through the materials used, the aesthetics of the designed product (mainly, shapes and colours), and its configuration. We will also delve into the socio-cultural context in which these objects were embedded. This unique dataset will benefit researchers in the various material and visual disciplines, as well as present an innovative approach to material content analysis. Material content analysis is crucial to understand the object-laden reality in which we work and live our lives. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide
