Summary A documentary about a young Arab-Israeli girl, Shadya. Director Roy Westler shows a struggle between ambition and tradition as a spirited Israeli-Arab girl challenges the traditional Muslim lifestyle planned for her by fighting to become a World Karate Champion. Shadya's conflict as an "Israeli-Arab" and as an "Arab-Woman" emerges when she meets the Palestinian karate team and when she marries at the peak of her career. At 17 years of age, she is a karate champion competing for Israel at the 2004 World Championships in South Africa, but she is suffering from an identity crisis: torn between the competing influences in her life as a Muslim girl but an Israeli citizen.During the competition she drapes herself in the Palestinian flag to the horror of her team; she does not know how to deal with her origins and confronts her Israeli team mates. The coach of the Palestinian team, meanwhile, refuses to train together with the Israeli team. Shadya's defiant gesture was an impulse that caused a media outcry. She explains it was for a photograph, but that is exactly what the Palestinians wanted to show - that here are Arab-Israelis who were Palestinians before 1948 and that their allegiance is more to Palestine and the flag than to Israel. Her Muslim family has been living in Tamra, Galilee for generations. Her father, Mazen, is broadminded and has always encouraged his daughter's karate career and defended it against the more conservative family members. He also gave the project his blessing and was a firm supporter of the film.Over the course of the film, the question presents itself as to whether the free spirited Shadya can cope with her clash in cultures - her brothers, who openly condemn her attitude, and so does her fiance, to whom she has been promised. Will Shadya reconcile her identity crisis? (From Palestine, Hebrew and Arabic, English subtitles)
