Summary |
Towards the end of the Warring States period in China in the third century BC only a few states remain dominant. The ambition of Ying Zheng the king of Qin is to unify the whole of China. Ying's ideals are laudable. He foresees a peaceful and prosperous country where barbarians will be kept at bay. Ying recognises that to achieve his objective will require much bloodshed. As a means of lessening the bloodshed Ying's lover Lady Zhao schemes and agrees to having herself branded and exiled so that she can convince the prince of Yan to send a hired assassin to kill Ying Zheng. Because Ying will know of the plot the attempt will be foiled. Directed by Chen Kaige, and stars Gong Li and Zheng Fengyi. (From China, in Mandarin, English subtitles) |
