Polis (meervoud: poleis) is het Oudgriekse woord voor stad, voor staat en voor de combinatie van die twee: een stadstaat. In de Oudheid leefden de meeste Grieken in zo'n stadstaat. De polis als staatsvorm of als type samenleving vormt de grondslag voor de gehele Griekse cultuur. De Griekse cultuur valt alleen te begrijpen als men de polis begrijpt. Stad en staat biedt een overzicht van de kenmerken van de polis als staats- en als nederzettingstype,in de archaïsche en klassieke tijd (ca. 600-300 v.C.), niet alleen van het goedgedocumenteerde klassieke Athene, maar van de pakweg 1499 andere pole |
