SAGE Research Methods. Cases
Summary This case study describes the design and implementation of a mixed-methods approach in a research project assessing trends in recruitment and retention of workers in apprenticeships in the construction trades in Oregon, USA, with a focus on gender and race/ethnicity. We discuss how the data collection for this mixed-methods project was conceptualized and executed as well as how the multiple sources of data were integrated into the analysis. This case study also addresses challenges in qualitative data collection and analysis (i.e., learning the language, policies, and processes of the construction trades; recruiting apprentices to participate in the interviews; and managing interviewerinterviewee dynamics) and in quantitative data collection and analysis (i.e., recruitment of apprentices for the survey, managing small cell sizes in the analysis, and statistical significance)
