Summary |
"These stories are intended to mark the centenary for Aborignal girls removed from families since 1912, for training and employment at the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls. Taken from their families as children under assimilationist policies of the NSW Aborignes Protection (later Welfare) Board, girls were trained at the Cootamundra Home for employment in houses and farms. For some girls it was the only home they knew. For others it was a place of loneliness and punishment. For many of the women who visited in the reunion of 2006, it was the first time they had returned since they left over 40 years ago. Amidst the sadness and remembering, there were moments of humour that had kept the sisterhood going through the difficult times. Until two memorials were unveiled on that occasion, there had been nothing at the place to ackowledge their experience."--xiii |
