Summary In his toughest challenge yet, author and broadcaster Simon Reeve charts a 36,000 kilometre journey around the world following the Tropic of Capricorn in this new four-part series.Episode 3: AustraliaIn the third episode, Simon follows the Tropic of Capricorn as it cuts through three states of Australia (Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland) and the vast wilderness of the Outback. His journey begins as the line hits Western Australia near Ningaloo reef, where he spots whales migrating south to Antarctica. From there he heads east to beautiful Karijini National Park and nearby Wittenoom Gorge, which authorities believe is the worst asbestos-contaminated site in the world. After visiting Newman, the site of the world's largest open-cut mine, Simon's next stop is Alice Springs. He arrives as a powerful government taskforce has been established to retake control of Aboriginal communities. In the shadow of Uluru, one such community lives in Third World conditions.Later, Simon heads east along Capricorn to stunning Heron Island, home to one of the world's pre- eminent marine research centres. The island is at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, where climate change threatens to wipe out the coral and the rich wildlife which thrives on it.
