The Australian dairy industry employed approximately 60 000 people and had export sales of over $2.3 billion in 2002-03. The industry is particularly important in the 183 Statistical Local Areas that comprise the eight Australian dairy regions where production and employment is highly concentrated. This report provides data on the contribution of the dairy industry to social and economic well-being in the dairy regions and considers the impacts of changes in market or resource access upon the dairy industry and regions
