Summary Much research has been conducted on cults (also known as New Religious Movements). Although plentiful, less work has been conducted on the differences between first- and second-generation ex-members' disaffiliation process. This research project employs a snowball sampling technique while using a key informant to help identify hard-to-reach participants. Semi-structured interviews provide in-depth data on the differences in disaffiliation between those who chose to live in a cult and those who were born into a cult
